Toyota Oil Change

Toyota Oil Change

Why Oil Changes are Important

The oil in your vehicle's engine plays a crucial role in maintaining proper operating conditions. Oil provides more than just lubrication for the moving parts inside the engine. It also provides cooling, removal of harmful contaminants, it helps prevent seals from becoming brittle, prevents corrosion, and can maintain engine performance.

If engine oil is not changed regularly or if you neglect its maintenance, several detrimental consequences can occur, potentially leading to costly engine damage and reduced vehicle performance.

How Often Should You Change Your Vehicle's Engine Oil?

Engine oil change intervals and the type of oil that is required will usually vary by your vehicle's make & model. Your driving habits will also affect the frequency that oil changes are needed. Generally, the rule of thumb is to make a service date every 8,000 km or every 6 months, whichever comes first, to have the engine oil and other components in your vehicle checked by an OpenRoad Toyota technician. The best source for oil change interval recommendations specific to your vehicle is your owner's manual. OpenRoad Toyota Service Advisors can also provide guidance on when your next service is due.

How Can You Check the Engine Oil Level?

Checking your vehicle's oil level is a straightforward process that you can do yourself. First, park your Toyota on a level surface with the engine turned off. Make sure that it's had some time for the oil to settle back into the oil pan, about 1-3 minutes. Open the vehicle's hood and locate the oil dipstick. It is typically a long, slender metal or plastic rod with a T-shaped or O-shaped handle, coloured yellow. Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe the entire length of the dipstick to remove any old oil or debris. Fully reinsert the dipstick back into its tube and then pull it out again. This time, take note of the oil level on the dipstick at the very tip. You'll see two markings on it. one for the "Full" level and one for the "Add" or "Low" level. The oil level should fall between these two marks. If it's closer to the "Full" mark, you're in good shape. If it's closer to the "Add" or "Low" mark, you should consider adding oil.

If the oil level is below the "Add" or "Low" mark, you should add oil to bring it up to the "Full" mark. Be sure to use the correct type and viscosity of oil recommended for your vehicle, as specified in the owner's manual. Add a small amount at a time, wait a moment, and then recheck the level until it reaches the "Full" mark. The note of the oil itself as well. If it's very dark or has shiny particles in it, you should consider changing it as soon as possible.
